Hurdy-gurdy

The type of hudry-gurdy that I have decided to build was made by a famous French luthier called Pimpard.  This one has a lute shaped body and this type are usually ornately finished as shown on the picture further down the page.

Here, the pieces for the luteback have been shaped and glued together, held in place by duct tape.  I heated the cherry wood and bent it to shape using a propane torch inside of a piece of scrap copper plumbing pipe. When the temperature was correct it bent very easily.  I had made a form earlier and used it to establish the shapes needed.

My form.

Below is an example of a professionally made Pimpard hurdy-gurdy built and photographed I understand by the fine luthier Chris Allen.  You can check out his work at www.hurdygurdy.org

Who knows?  Maybe mine will look as good as this one one day.
